I chose this book because it was about two brothers living on a farm. I was curious about what the winter room was. It is also a Newberry Honor book.
Elden is the main character. He lives on a farm. Elden has an older brother Wayne. He was sickly as a child. He does the easier chores on the farm. The story is told by Elden in first person. Another character in the story is Uncle David. He lives with Elden on the farm. He is quite a storyteller. His story telling is an important part of The Winter Room.
Elden is describing his life on the farm. He tells about the four seasons. You feel like you know his family through his story. That’s how we meet Uncle David. Through Uncle David story telling in the parlor, called the winter room, the mystery unfolds.
I would give this book five stars. I would recommend this book. Once you start reading it you won’t want to put it down. As Elden describes the seasons you almost feel like your part of the farm. When Uncle David tells his stories, you want to hear more. The surprise ending makes you glad you read the book.
